Retainers

Helping Denver Smile For Life

Just like diet and exercise, you have to keep up the work if you want to remain healthy. In this case, the way to preserve your fantastic new smile is through the retention phase of orthodontic treatment. Once your braces are off or your Invisalign® treatment is complete, Dr. Eberle will prescribe a retainer. This will be worn at night to keep your teeth from shifting. Throughout your journey with us, our mission is to craft the perfect smile you’ve longed for. To ensure the longevity of that radiant smile, it’s crucial that you make sure to continue wearing your retainer!

Types Of Retainers

Dr. Eberle uses two different kinds of retainers to maintain your beautiful new smile—removable and bonded retainers. The removable ones come in two different styles. Here’s what you need to know about them:

  • Bonded Retainer: These consist of a thin wire that is custom-made to fit to the back of your teeth, making it discreet and less noticeable. The wire is designed to hold the teeth in their corrected positions, preventing them from shifting back to their original alignment. Dr. Eberle is a big believer in this type of retainer and wears one herself!

  • Traditional Retainer: These removable retainers are made of acrylic that is molded to fit to the roof of the mouth (for upper retainers) or the floor of the mouth (for lower retainers). The traditional retainer may also have wires or clasps that grip onto specific teeth to hold the retainer in place.

  • Clear Aligner-Style Retainer: These are clear, transparent trays that fit over the teeth. This is also removable, allowing you to take them out for activities like eating, brushing and flossing.

What Is The Right Retainer For You?

Remember, consistently using your retainer, especially in the initial months following orthodontic treatment, is key to prevent teeth from moving back to their original positions. Dr. Eberle will help determine which style of retainer is best for you, but here are some points to consider:

  • The removable retainers will require you to wear them consistently, but the benefit is that they can be taken out for activities, while bonded retainers are always in place.

  • To safeguard your investment in a beautiful smile, you’ll need to make it a habit to store your removable retainer in its case whenever you take it out for meals or oral care.

  • Say goodbye to tracking hours or fretting about consistent wear–with a bonded retainer, your smile stays in place without the need for constant monitoring.

  • A bonded retainer requires extra diligence to oral care like brushing and flossing to keep plaque away.

  • Since clear retainers completely cover the teeth, they take some getting used to. You may find it challenging to speak, sing or play an instrument at first.

How Long Will I Need To Wear My Retainer?

Wearing your retainer long-term, at least on a nightly basis, helps prevent any potential relapse, where the teeth gradually shift back towards their original positions. Following Dr. Eberle’s instructions is important to ensure the success of orthodontic treatment over the long term.
